Gold Coast 7’s Recap!
GCCIR October 7's was a great day event. All had fun and new friendships were formed. GCCIR hope, is to make this an annual event and turn this into a USA RUGBY and NSCRO 7's Qualify. GCCIR believes this tournament can be a great recruiting tool on campus with some bragging rights for some schools and some reflection for other clubs.
Cup winner was ASU. Fresh coming in from DI-A conference. They are just getting their sea legs for how GCCIR is run, they will be a force to be reckoned with and GCCIR members welcome them.
Plate winner was Claremont NSCRO National Champions in 15’s. The loss to ASU was tough pill to swallow. But when they get to full force after football season this might be a different story in 15’s season.
Bowl winner was Pont Loma NSCRO Challenge cup winners from 2018. There win over Norco College was a nail biter and a fun one. Some true respect for each other was shown.
Shield winner was Norco College. Not only are they a fresh addition to GCCIR but this is their first year as a college rugby team. They are focused on the 15’s season with player’s deep in tradition at High School rugby level. They maybe young and fresh on the collage seen but definitely a team to watch.
Then there was the USC (GCCIR DI Team) Vs Cal State Fullerton (GCCIR DIII Team) This also was a nail bitter and a close game with Fullerton coming out on top. Fullerton are in a rebuild phase and under the leadership of Coach Roy and there new President Jason Limon we could see them come back to their former glory days.
Now to those evil people called referees (LOL). GCCIR thanks DeLyn and the referees for a well-run official line up, and keeping the tournament moving along in style.
Special thanks go’s to Brandon Johnson, Director Intramurals, Club Sports and Recreation Coordinator of Faculty/Staff Fitness and Wellness of Pomona College (Wow that’s a long title). Brandon did a great job setting up, he doesn’t sit back and delegate he just did it himself. From GCCIR thanks for all your help.
Blooper of the day was when Mr. Wilson (Commissioner of GCCIR) Gave the Shield to Point Loma who started to scratch their heads. Then Mr. Wilson went on to give the Bowl to Norco College who politely said, “but we lost to Point Loma”. Mr. Wilson in his magnificent wisdom immediately corrected the situation and behind the scenes was seen quietly blaming the 4th Official Steve Vent (who is GCCIR Secretary) in the woodshed, and what was that wacky way to do a coin toss “Is it in my left hand or Right”.
